LUM!X and Pia Maria to represent Austria at Eurovision 2022 ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡น

On Tuesday 8th February on the Austrian radio show ร–3-Wecker, it was announced that the DJ LUM!X will represent Austria at Eurovision 2022 with the song Halo. The song will be released at a later date and the vocalist of the track is Pia Maria.

Who is LUM!X?

Luca Michlmayr, better known as LUM!X, has had some huge hits not just across Europe but globally, most notably his sample of Monster (originally by Meg & Dia), with Gabry Ponte in 2019. This song currently has over 211 million listens on Spotify and at the time of writing this, he is the 479th most listened to Spotify artist in the world. At only 19 years old, he is one of Europe’s hottest artists in dance and EDM music. He is currently based in Milan and actually has an Italian mother – perfect for a Eurovision edition in Italy!

What should we expect from Halo?

It’s clear that LUM!X will be bringing an EDM party to Turin! His electronic hooks and drops will be a very familiar sound to many across Europe. However, in general, this genre and DJ-style music hasn’t done particularly well at Eurovision in the past. For example, global well-known DJ and producer Darude represented Finland in 2019 with Look Away, finishing seventeenth in the semi-final. However, there has still been some successes of tracks in a similar genre to LUM!X’s music, like Norway in 2017 with Grab the Moment by JOWST, who finished tenth in the Eurovision final.

LUM!X will be looking to change the course of EDM music at Eurovision – with his big streaming successes, could he be the person to do this? This is definitely a different direction for Austria, but they have failed to qualify since winning the jury vote in 2018 with Cesรกr Sampson – Nobody But You. It’s been clear that Austria’s Eurovision scout Eberhard Forcher has been wanting to mix it up for 2022 when he’s been talking previously to the press about his journey selecting their Eurovision 2022 entry. We’re excited to hear what LUM!X has to offer and we welcome him to the Eurovision family!
